Taronga Zoo

Mosman, NSW

$7,000,000

In 2001 CC Pines designed and constructed a new Cable Car ride at Taronga Zoo.

The client, Taronga Zoo, was represented by NSW Department of Commerce.

The design process was completed by CC PINES and construction commenced once the final design was approved.

This project presented many challenges, the position of the towers were adjacent to animal enclosures and in the way of the zoo patrons.

The equipment involved including the towers, cable, gondolas and the top and bottom stations were all installed without causing interruptions to normal zoo operations.

The cable alone was 50mm thick and the full length of it weighed 10 tons. After installation over the towers it had to be spliced over 50m.

CC Pines, in their design were able to implement many of their own improvements to the original Functional Design Brief (FDB). Some of these included six-seat Gondolas rather than four-seat which provided more room for strollers and other large items and could transport a greater number of passengers, a separate control room and sound absorbing ceiling material which dampened ambient noise.

A unique design feature originating with CC Pines, enabled the cable cars to drop to a very low loading and unloading speed at the top and bottom stations which accommodated children, the elderly and disabled passengers. Traditional alpine lifts cater for experienced skiers and would not have suited Taronga Zoo’s patrons.

Mosman Council

Mosman, NSW

$1,500,000

During 2007/2008 CC Pines undertook this five month project for Mosman Council which involved the construction of civil, electrical and mechanical infrastructure to capture and transport rainwater for re-use. Three netball courts were built on top of a 500 kilolitre rainwater storage tank and the rest of the site was landscaped and replanted which included a rock check dam and spillway.

The works involved the excavation of almost the entire site with strict environmental control for Phytophthora Management and Archaeological Relics. We also delivered the works in accordance with ourWaste Management Plan that required the recycling of almost all material that was transported off site. We developed an alternative construction methodology for the 500 kilolitre rainwater storage tank which saved Mosman Council considerable time and money.

Royal Australian Air Force

Richmond, NSW

$11,200,000

This detailed design and construct project involved the demolition and recycling of a large warehouse and the construction of purpose designed offices and workshop facilities. The site originally housed a large warehouse which was carefully taken apart and re-erected in an alternative location.

The large sheds that originally occupied the site were carefully taken apart and transported to country NSW where they were re-erected as a sale yards auction house. The demolition methodology had to be adjusted and the works were completed with great care in order to facilitate this “recycling” of the asset. The newly built workshop facility is now a single structure of approx  6000m2. The structural system was based on a steel portal frame and cladded with steel sheeting. The internal fit-out included environmental systems, ventilation systems, safety systems and customised workspaces such as vehicle maintenance pits, offices and cleaning stations.

The new HQ building included an air-conditioning system that was designed and installed by CC Pines. This resulted in significant cost savings that were passed onto the client. The entire project including demolition, construction, landscaping and internal fit-out was completed successfully and within the specified time scales. The works have consequently served as an example, upon which other similar projects have been based.

The new facilities (seven buildings in total) were built directly on the cleared site. CC Pines undertook all construction including the preparation of the footings, all structural assembly work, and all internal fit-out as well as exterior shaping works such as asphalting and landscaping. In addition, CC Pines produced an alternative solution for the facility which delivered a direct cost saving of over $1 million for the client.

HMAS Waterhen, NSW

$1,000,000

In 2007 we completed a challenging project for the Department of Defence to transform a derelict site into a level and paved 5500sqm car park.  The project involved the importation and compaction of 12,000 tonnes of crushed sandstone which was overlayed with road base and asphaltic concrete.

The drainage solution for the site involved the formation of a bio-swale at the top of a 32m sheer cliff face followed by placement of 375mm fibre re-enforced concrete (FRC) pipes down the cliff to connect into existing infrastructure at the base.

Warringah Council

Dee Why Beach, NSW

$90,000

During the summer of 2008/2009 CC Pines undertook a project to construct a new lifeguard platform at Dee Why Beach for Warringah Council. The new structure featured reinforced concrete piles, reinforced concrete slab and beam downturns, paved surfacing and a metal hand rail. The harsh beach conditions dictated the use of resilient materials, which included stainless steel handrails, high strength/low shrinkage concrete, and salt water resistant concrete coatings.

The project was delivered over the busy summer period, which required extra focus on safety and environmental issues such as secure fencing, pedestrian management and tidal protection. CC Pines addressed all these matters without incident.

Bureau of Meteorology

Gunnedah, NSW

$750,000

Near the end of 2009, CC Pines was engaged to erect a 22m high radar tower for the Bureau of Meteorology on the top of a mountain in country NSW. The tower was made up of three separate sections all requiring carefully coordinated crane lifts and specialist equipment to complete the connections.

The project also required extensive road works to be conducted on 7kms of dirt track to provide suitable access to the site for the necessary construction and delivery vehicles.

An additional building to house the radar equipment was also installed along with a backup generator to provide constant power to the facility.

Terrey Hills, NSW

$900,000

Near the end of 2008, CC Pines was engaged to erect a 30m high radar tower for the Bureau of Meteorology. The tower was made up of five separate sections all requiring carefully coordinated crane lifts and specialist equipment to complete the connections.

The project also involved civil works to prepare the site, a large concrete pour (140m³) for the tower footing, drainage works and construction of an equipment building to support the tower, installation of an air-conditioning system and the installation of an extensive UPS with generator backup power supply.

All the works were coordinated and completed without interruption to the golf course which was adjacent to the site.

Department of Defence

Defence Establishment Orchard Hills, NSW

$2,000,000

This multi-faceted Design and Construct project involved the upgrade of a missile testing area, a test control room, and installation of a highly capable HVAC system required to deliver controlled conditioning and humidity to the testing facility within strict tolerances.

The works required a high level of precision, technical ability and a flexible working methodology to allow for working restrictions that were imposed during missile testing periods. Despite this uncertainty, the works were completed within the allotted program schedule and CC Pines were nominated for a US Navy commendation.

NSW Department of Housing

Woolloomooloo

$110,000

In late 2007, the Department of Housing commissioned CC Pines to remove an unsafe timber fence and replace it with secure steel framework. The build included 80m of security fencing panels which follow a 6˚ rake. The main complexities to this job were constructing and securing the fence to a cliff face 30 feet off the ground.

The majority of the fence line was above existing housing, preventing access to the cliff face from ground level.  OH&S risks were far greater due to a need to work over a ledge with heavy tools, materials as well as the requirement for hot-works.

CC Pines Pty Ltd

Oxford Falls, NSW

$1,000,000

In 2005 CC Pines needed to move into new commercial premises as the business continued to grow. We decided to design and build our new premises as a “project” using our own staff and sub contractors.

The project was completed in 2006 and resulted in a complex that includes two office areas, a plant storage shed, a warehouse, timber and metal fabrication shops, a sand blasting facility, external storage space and two car park areas. The site has also been landscaped to include a gazebo and BBQ area and environmentally conscious erosion control measures. This complex provides us with a capability which cannot be matched by builders without these facilities for fabrication, material treatment and storage.

Project Cost:

Sydney Airport

Mascot, NSW

$300,000

This project involved demolition and removal of the old Air Traffic Control Tower that was located above the fire station at Sydney Airport.

CC Pines was awarded the project due to our innovative methodology whereby the tower structure was removed in one piece using a crane and the resulting roof void was then promptly made good. The tower structure was disassembled on the ground which meant flying operations were able to continue un-interrupted.

Many of the materials from the tower were recycled by CC Pines and some of the structural steel was harvested and re-used to construct warehouses.

Department of Defence

Defence Establishment Orchard Hills, NSW

$250,000.00

The fencing upgrade project at Defence Establishment Orchard Hills involved the installation of new fencing at three different site locations and security upgrades to physical entrance points within two facilities.

These requirements were born so that all three locations were able to house new ‘high-security’ weapons dispatched from America. The Project involved extremely short time frames which required careful pre-planning, an off-site manufacturing and pre-construction process, and an innovative delivery stage to help maximise efficiencies. The works were completed within time frames which reduced client expenses associated for security escorting.

Department of Defence

Defence Establishment Orchard Hills, NSW

$2,800,000

This project involved the construction of a new Explosive Store House on a greenfield site at Defence Establishment Orchard Hills. The storehouse was to hold soon to be purchased explosive ordnance and had to be built within extremely tight time frames.

The project involved 1000m3 of concrete, 120 tonnes of steel reinforcing, over 20,000 tonnes of imported fill and 600m of new armoured electrical cable set into a new trench. The entire bunker was sealed with a waterproof membrane and then covered with compacted earth for protection. 7000m² of turf was then laid over the building and batter slopes. A Type 1 SCEC endorsed security system was installed to monitor the building and the new electrical supply line was earthed every 75m for protection. All reinforcing was also earthed to the main earth stake adjacent to the building in order to ensure no static electricity could build up around the ordinance.

Department of Defence

Garden Island, NSW

$550,000

This project involved the rip out and replacement of several pieces of HVAC plant from an occupied building at Garden Island Navy Base. We removed and replaced two large chillers (one from within the building and one from behind the building) as well as 6 fan coil units from the Level 1 ceiling space.

The work involved a combination of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, control and general building works that had to be completed while the building was still occupied.  The general building works in particular were beyond the capability of traditional mechanical contractors and the crane operations, particularly to remove the internal chiller, were extremely technical.

University of NSW

Kingsford, Sydney

$235,000

This detailed construct only project involved the extensive renovation of an existing Child Care Centre for the University of New South Wales.

So that minimal disruption was imposed, the project took place over the short Christmas break where children and staff were on their holidays.

Understandably, this brought sourcing challenges with many suppliers and subcontractors closed over this period. Despite this, CC Pines completed the project in 22 days (out of an available 32) which included a variety of additional works requested by the Client throughout the project duration.
